They told her she had a voice unlike the others in the room, and a long career ahead of it — and that of everything on the trip, meeting Hasitha was the best of it.

What I sing

Two classical systems, the film music I grew up on, and whatever else gets stuck in my head.

Carnatic: The system I was raised in. Varnams before school, kritis that took a year to sit right.
Hindustani: A slower patience. One raga opened across an evening, alap before anything is asked to move.
South Indian film: Ilaiyaraaja, Rahman, and the songs a whole region can sing back at you.
Hindi playback: Golden-era melody, and whatever is stuck in my head this month.
And whatever else: Bhajans, folk, western, and collaborations that refuse to pick a lane.

Sadhana

I got tired of not knowing whether my Ga was actually where I thought it was. So I built a thing that listens. Pick a ragam, set your shruti, sing — it tells you where every swara really lands, keeps the tala, and writes up the session when you stop.
